I’m not a master of anything. I don’t claim to be better at anything than anyone else. When it comes to photography, I am drawn to moments and history. Humor and the idea of creating heirloom photos is also something that drives me to pick up my camera. I just shoot the way it feels to me. What’s so beautiful about documentary photography to is that I don’t have to be perfect. I actually strive for imperfection. I approach a scene and expect to make a photo that shows my viewer exactly what I was experiencing while I was there. I document.
When it comes to telling a story, color is almost always an inspiration for me. It adds to a story in more ways than one. It can tell the viewer how to feel when looking at a photo. It tells more about where the photo was taken. It can help you feel like you are more a part of the experience. It can create mood, emotion, warmth, and coldness. Color in an image can also be imperative to the narrative of the image.
Black and white is different. It removes distractions and takes the attention away from less important subjects. It can be mysterious and dramatic. Most importantly, to me at least, is that it adds to that timeless feel. It allows me to just simply tell a story.
I shot this birthday party yesterday, and I’ll be delivering a full album of color photos, but I couldn’t help but fall in love with the story in these black and white images.
